Welcome to SHAG!

SHAGLARP stands for "Sifton House Associated Gamers Live Action Role Playing". It was created by 5 friends in response to the growing need for a diverse LARP portal in the Portland Metro Area. Our hope is to provide a community for LARPers to meet, discuss, find resources, as well as network and find games (you may read anything on the site without signing up). We support many forms of LARP, from troupe games, to Amtgard, to CAM. We offer many amenities for LARPers:

Forum: You will need to register to post, but you can read anything on the forum as a guest. (We only require registration to post in order to manage SPAM.)

Calendar: A place to find LARP related events; from games, to one-shots, to conventions, to events where one might get costuming or props, all in the Portland, Vancouver, Salem circle. (Check out SHAG's first One Shot posted in December!)

News: Right now the news is just for events and site updates, but we hope to have news eventually about the LARP community in the NW.

Database: A database full of articles from running LARP, role-playing, costuming, props, playing LARP, as well as other resources.

Links: Links to LARP related sites, as well as LARP games in the area (as we find them...)

Photos: Pictures from conventions, games and one shots. (Because the gallery is hosted by Coppermine, you will have to register again in the photo section if you want to upload any photos of your own.)

And we are always looking for more. We encourage everyone to submit their ideas and opinions in the forums. You can also submit events to the calendar, and news and database articles by submitting news. Feedback is ALWAYS appreciated. And don't forget to recommend us to a friend if you like what you see here!

Thank you, from everyone on the SHAG team.

Upcoming Events Chronicle Game in Portland!

Wyqued writes "Beautiful Madness is a chronicle game coming to Portland. For those who do not know, there are two types of LARP sessions:

A One-Shot is a one session stand-alone game, usually with pre-generated characters, though sometimes you can create your own, that is only played once.

A Chronicle is a long running game with multiple sessions, usually with a character you create and play multiple times.

A Game of Beautiful Madness

The protagonists of this modern fairy tale are the changelings, or as they often call themselves, the Lost. Stolen away from their human lives as children or adults, they spent what seemed like years or even centuries in Faerie, chattel to beautiful but inhuman lords and ladies. Fed on faerie food and drink, they gradually became more fae themselves, their bodies shifting slightly to reflect their roles. Some, however, managed to escape. Holding on to their memories of home, they found their way through the winding thorns of the Hedge, the barrier between the mortal world and time-twisted Faerie.

Gaming News How Lovecraft Helped the Role-Playing World

I came across this article in the examiner. While I am not as old a gamer as some people here (I only got into RPG/LARPs about 7 years ago) some of the more experienced gamers might be able to give their two cents on the subject. I do know that Lovecraftians are keeping the cult alive, what with our HP Lovecraft Festival and Cthulhu Con and even SHAGLARPs patrons to the genre with our awesome Call of Cthuhlu game coming in October (at a real haunted house even!!)

LARP News Save a Gamer Foundation

We came across this great video about Save a Gamer Foundation. It's created by Seventh Kingdom IGE, a boffer LARP group in New Jersey. Overall it's well done, and quite funny!

Upcoming Events LARPers Take A Cruise!

Intercon Splash 1 is a convention type cruise that LARPers can attend in October, 26-31st. It takes off from New Orleans, and cruises throughout the Caribbean. This is their second year running, and it looks like the first year was a great success. They have all kinds of activities. They even have services for corporate, honeymoons, and family reunions.

LARP News LARP featured on G4

G4 Underground is a television show that covers "other subjects other networks won't touch." Tonight, Sunday 9ET (right now actually, sorry about the late notice) they are featuring a boffer style LARP. I don't have the G4 cable channel, and from their website, it doesn’t look like they have shows streaming online, but I am sure it will be somewhere.

Gaming News White Wolf Releases the title of their new Genre!

Well, it's been known for a while that White Wolf would be doing a series called Geist, which was assumed to be similar to the Wraith series. Just recently, they released the idea for the series: Geist: the Sin-Eaters.

"A rulebook for playing the Sin-Eaters, mortals who have passed through the gates of Death and returned, bonded with the unusual shades known as geists. An expanded look at death and the Underworld in the World of Darkness, from simple ghosts to strange threats such as the Kerberoi. Provides new player types and antagonists for crossover chronicles as well as chronicles focusing on Sin-Eaters."

The release date for Geist: the Sin-Eaters will be August 2009. Not much is known about it, but White Wolf, when replacing their message boards, has created a forum just for the series.

LARP News LARP News: Game On

In a recent article published on the College Media Network, on January 26th, 2009, the topic of gaming as a subculture came up. In the article, they talk about the roots of gaming, as well as the roots of Live Action Role Playing, and a campus' solution to an obstacle of gaming space. It also talks about the stigma of gaming and it's relation (or lack there of) in the crimes the media tries to tie it to. I found the article very interesting and noteworthy, so I thought I would post it here.

LARP News LARP News: Murder Will Out

White Wolf has released another SAS (Storyteller Adventure System) in PDF. These are like mini-modules that are great for inserting plot lines into a currently running game, or can stand alone as a one-shot or convention run game.

The latest SAS that White Wolf released (January 28th) is Murder Will Out, for Hunter the Vigil. The general idea of this system is that there is a killer lose, and in order to stop it, the Hunters must research the background of the cases. What they find it that it's not one killer, but many, and that there is a dark secret that links them all.

Each system comes with character records, props, and in this system includes hyperlinks to various portions of text, and bookmarks to web pages.

For more information, you can check out the White Wolf site, or you can buy it at DriveThroughRPG
